The foundation of our working method relies on the concept of ‘designing by doing.’ It is strongly built on the idea that a material or technique has to intuitively guide a designer’s process while keeping the designer’s personal skills and fascinations in mind. envisions offers companies new experimentations, specifically focused on their existing materials or techniques, to obtain highly original insights on how their products can be applied in alternative and innovative ways. The first outcome of this experimental way of working is suggestive and abstract, aimed at sparking imagination and triggering dialogue. The following phase is focused on using the gathered insights as an endless source of inspiration or develop and translate the experimentations into new and innovative products.
For every project or collaboration we select a minimum of three designers that have affinity with the defined focus or the required skills for the project. The designers should be distinct talents, but their work should compliment each other. We aim to highlight our mainly collective notion, in which there remains space for personal qualities, and put the team’s efforts above the individual.
Physically bringing together the diversity of our designers in the shape of the envisions projects is always an awe-inspiring event that takes place in the headquarters of envisions at the Fuutlaan in Eindhoven. Here we meet several times a year for a general, future-focused, brainstorm session and once in two weeks when it concerns a specific project. The designers consult and provoke each other in an open dialogue to spark new ideas and quicken the development of presented concepts.
After completing the experimentation phase we use the stage of international design shows to showcase the collaborations between envisions and the relating company to generate great PR value for both parties and to set out our ideology. It gives companies the opportunity to present themselves as a progressive and open-minded enterprise. To envisions it’s important to show the development of their collaborations in order to convince other parties of their working method, gain new insights and receive feedback on their process by talking with the public. With the materials exclusively conceived for the company and the choice of a specific presentation moment, we maintain a holistic approach and a strong awareness of the context to create a total experience.
Since our first exhibition we have greatly valued a thorough documentation of our work. Therefore – as a witness of the happenings – we traditionally realise a publication of our collaborations. Whereas exhibitions can be fast-paced and overwhelming we believe that a book is more enduring, allowing the viewer to take more time to look at the different details created in the refined work of the envisionaires. Being a physical and lasting display of the collaborations, a continuation of the book series will create a close to accurate archive of envisions’ development. It makes it possible to communicate the values of a research towards a broader audience that is interested in our approach, while surpassing the fear of copycats.
